I don't think I'll forget the end of 2017 for iOS gaming ever. We saw some unexpected and superb releases one after the other hit iOS but nothing comes close to what Aspyr Media released. They brought 2K and Firaxis' Civilization VI [Free (HD)] to iPad and went all the way. Civilization VI on iPad isn't a mobile version or a spinoff. It is the full game for iPad and it also asked for the full AAA console and PC game price with the $59.99 unlock. Ever since release, Aspyr has been updating it with various fixes and adding the DLC available in the PC version slowly. In fact we've seen an update each month more or less recently but the latest update isn't just about adding more DLC...

It's been about a month since the last big update to Nintendo's Fire Emblem Heroes [Free], which means we were just about due for another one. And here we are! The focus this time around seems to be in revamping the multiplayer Arena Mode and making some adjustments to welcome newcomers to the ever-expanding game. Even those who stick to the single-player maps will find a few things to like in this latest version, however...

It's often been the case throughout gaming history that certain releases have been altered for specific regions. These days, it mostly comes down to making certain cosmetic changes for local tastes or censoring things that may be seen as taboo. In the past, it was also quite common to make extensive changes to the fundamental gameplay. Renting games is illegal in Japan, but outside of Japan, any kid could drop a few bucks and take home the latest game for the weekend. In an effort to keep said kids from beating the games in a single rental, the difficulty was often jacked up for Western releases...

It's hard to believe that it's been more than five years since Real Racing 3 [Free] hit the App Store and brought the world of free to play to Firemint's previously premium-only racing series. While I'm sure that was ultimately the right move in terms of success seeing as Real Racing 3 has been constantly updated over those five years and is still a massively popular game even today, there's still a twinge of sadness from those of us who spent our formative mobile gaming years enjoying the first two Real Racing games. The one silver lining to the release of Real Racing 3 was that EA (who bought developer Firemint in 2011 and merged them with fellow Australian developer Iron Monkey in 2012 to form new subsidiary Firemonkeys to create Real Racing 3) has continued to update the previous game in the series Real Racing 2 [$4.99] to keep that premium experience going alongside the new free to play entry. Unfortunately Real Racing 2 had issues running on iOS 11 and has been broken ever since, but today that's a thing of the past thanks to a brand new update...

Hello everyone, and welcome to the week! It's time once again for our look back at the noteworthy updates of the last seven days. I'm just coming off a long holiday, so this week's article isn't quite as beefy as usual. Nevertheless, I shook off my holiday haze long enough to find a handful of interesting updates for your approval. Of course, you can keep an eye out for updates yourself using AppShopper or by participating in the TouchArcade forums. This weekly summary is just here to fill you in on the things you might have missed. Let's dig in!..

Following a lengthy soft-launch, Bandai Namco finally released their mobile version of Tekken [Free] to the masses this past February, offering up a highly-polished version of the swipe fighting that has proven so popular in the mobile world with games like Marvel Contest of Champions, Injustice, and the sublime Skullgirls. As long as you enjoyed the streamlined fighting mechanics and the somewhat convoluted free to play shenanigans, Tekken Mobile is one of the better swipe fighters on the App Store, with high-end graphics and the unique and fun Waza Card combat system that allows you more agency in stringing together cool combos. This week, Bandai Namco has released a new update for Tekken Mobile which includes a bit of a crossover with longtime frenemy fighting game series Street Fighter as Akuma joins the roster as a new playable character. Check him out...

You don't typically expect huge production values and interesting story elements in a free to play runner, but that's exactly what PikPok was shooting for when they released Into the Dead 2 [Free] back in October of last year. Building on the tremendously creepy atmosphere of the first game, Into the Dead 2 also brought with it a complete story-driven campaign with actually decent voiceover work and interesting twists and turns. Fans really ate up the story elements in the game, and have been clamoring for stuff like it in Into the Dead 2. As was hinted at over the past few weeks, PikPok is delivering just that with their just-launched Divided content update. This is a limited time story event, and here's the description in the developer's own words:..

I'm constantly baffled by how quickly time seems to fly by in the world of mobile gaming. Just over two years ago Parta Games launched their Choplifter-inspired helicopter rescue game Choppa [Free] on the App Store, and to me it feels like that was just yesterday. However, here we are, and in those two years since its release Parta has added all sorts of great new features to Choppa including a fun survival mode in its last major update from this past September. Now to celebrate this two year milestone, a final content update for Choppa has been released. In it you'll find two brand new choppas: One a UFO and one a *checks notes* vacuum cleaner? Well, that sounds pretty cool to me! Here's the Choppa launch trailer in case you've never seen it in action...

Last year Rockstar Games broke from their yearly tradition of releasing a new mobile game, but that doesn't mean that they've stopped caring about their existing library on the App Store. Ever since nabbing an iPhone X when they released last November, I've been wanting all of my favorite games to be updated to take advantage of the beautiful full screen of the device, and that includes all of Rockstar's offerings. Well it took almost six months but at least one of Rockstar's mobile titles, and arguably their most popular one, has just been updated for the iPhone X. That game is none other than Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas [$6.99], the largest and most robust of that original trilogy of open-world 3D crime games. ..

For those living outside of Japan (which I'd guess is most of our readers), this is pretty much an average, ordinary week. But if you live in Japan, you'll know this fantastic week as Golden Week, a time of the year where a cluster of holidays leads to most of, if not an entire, week off. It's a time to travel, a time to treat yourself with some new goodies, and a time for some pretty sweet sales. In an increasingly small digital world, those sales are more and more frequently popping up across the globe. Players of Nintendo's Fire Emblem Heroes [Free] can reap the rewards of the holidays no matter where they live, for example...

Season 4 of Fortnite [Free] begins today, and while as of press time, the servers are still down, the iOS version 4.0 is rolling out now, and it reveals the first details of what to expect. What does the comet bring? While the notes say that it brings "new locations to explore," we know that the comet offers glowing rocks that gives a low-gravity effect to those that consume them. See a high-altitude fortress? Instead of giving away your position by blowing it up, perhaps the time has come to instead jump above it and give your enemy some death from above? The new intro trailer shows off some of what the update contains:..

Rayark has been quite busy in 2018, first launching Cytus II [$1.99], the sequel to their fan-favorite rhythm game, back in January and then launching their visually stunning puzzle RPG Sdorica - Sunset [Free] just a couple weeks ago following a fairly lengthy soft launch period. Now the worlds of both games are colliding with a new update to Cytus II which adds a couple of Sdorica songs to the set list for free. To get these new songs, according to the update description, "Players can read the corresponding iM posts in Character - NEKO#ΦωΦ to unlock the collaboration songs." Here's a trailer for this new version 1.2 content...

The season 4 downtime for Fortnite [Free] begins on Tuesday, May 1st, at 4:00 AM EDT. Season 3 of the the Battle Pass ends a little before this update, at 3:30 AM EDT, so you won't be able to get the John Wick-inspired "The Reaper" outfit after tonight. There will also be a short period between when However, there are bulk Battle Pass tiers available in the shop, so if you're willing to drop a few bucks for the cause, you can maybe get that outfit at last. Otherwise, it's time to start grinding out those objectives, ASAP! ..

Best iPhone Game Updates: 'Fortnite', 'Marvel Avengers Academy', 'Clash Royale', 'Choice of Games', and More

Hello everyone, and welcome to the week! It's time once again for our look back at the noteworthy updates of the last seven days. This was an exciting week in updates, with many great games getting iOS 11 and iPhone X updates, including much of SNK's lineup. But as usual, we're focused here on content updates, and I've found a nice batch for you to consider. Of course, you can keep an eye out for updates yourself using AppShopper or by participating in the TouchArcade forums. This weekly summary is just here to fill you in on the things you might have missed. Let's dig in!..

Squigly is Heading to 'Skullgirls Mobile', Check Out Our Exclusive Gameplay Gifs of Her in Action

Fighting games have been split into two distinct camps on mobile. On one side there's the traditional fighting game that offers free movement of characters and pretty much behaves like a fighting game on other platforms by using a bunch of virtual buttons to approximate physical controls. Then there's what I've come to call "swipe fighters" which take most of the mechanics of a normal fighting game but streamline them to be conducive to taps and swiping gestures on the touchscreen. The traditional-style fighting games have found a small but passionate audience on mobile, with Street Fighter IV CE being the best example of that version done right. However, the swipe fighters have been the ones to break into the mainstream of the mobile market, with games like Marvel: Contest of Champions and Injustice 2, among many others, amassing millions of active players and raking in money hand over fist. ..

For the past week, platforming fans have been gushing over Oddmar [$4.99], and with good reason. It's absolutely one of the best platformers ever released on mobile. But it's certainly not alone in the stable of classic mobile platformers, and one of the other most beloved ones has just received an update for the full screen of the iPhone X. That game is Goblin Sword [$1.99] from Gelato Games, and if this is somehow the first you're hearing of this game, boy are you in for a treat. Goblin Sword is a hack 'n slash action platformer with light RPG elements and some of the finest pixel art we've seen. Check it out in the launch trailer below...

If you're a gamebook fan, you've probably already downloaded Tin Man's Fighting Fantasy Classics [Free], a cool new hub app for all things Fighting Fantasy. Right from launch, the app included a nice selection of titles, some of which were receiving the Tin Man treatment for the very first time. But the Fighting Fantasy series was a long one, packed to the gills with many great adventures spanning multiple authors and genres. Many of those books have gone ages without a digital release, if they had one at all. Well, one of the most-demanded titles has now its way back to iOS and is now available for purchase within the Fighting Fantasy Classics app...

After we first learned back in 2014 Dinosaur Polo Club would be bringing their subway planning game Mini Metro [$4.99] to mobile, it felt like it took FOREVER for it to finally release. Now looking back I can hardly believe that we're coming up on the two year anniversary this fall of it launching for iOS. Time is a funny thing. Anyway, just because Mini Metro has been out in the wild for a couple of years, doesn't mean the Dinosaur Polo Club is done with it. Not by a long shot! Today they've released a new update for Mini Metro which offers three alternate versions of existing maps in the game. To unlock these alternate versions, you'll need to deliver 1000 riders on any of the original versions of each map. Here's a quick synopsis of the three new maps:..

The Fortnite [Free] 3.6 update is out now, and the patch notes revealed an important new feature for mobile players: a virtual fire button option! For the game's entire existence, players have have had to just tap on the right side of the screen to fire, though this has had issues where players can't accurately start firing just through taps, making gun fights a bit more awkward on a touchscreen than they needed to be. But no longer! You will have to enable it manually from the options, and version 3.6 requires an App Store client update with data re-download in the app, but once you get it all downloaded, you'll be able to fire your weapons with impunity from the right side of the screen! This solves perhaps the biggest issue with the game, and its greatest deficiency in comparison to PUBG Mobile [Free]: controls. ..

Fortnite [Free] version 3.6 downtime is on its way early this week, with the downtime happening at 4:00 AM EDT on Tuesday, April 24th. The servers will be down, and they usually go down for about an hour or so, before resuming play with the latest update. While sometimes the content doesn't go live until Thursday, this does mean that when the new content is live, a massive update isn't required. Currently, the game is on version 3.5, with smaller updates in the past couple of weeks. A new version number might be on the way soon with season 3 coming to an end in a few days. Note that if you like the 50 vs 50 mode, you might want to play it before it possibly goes away with this 3.6 downtime! Also, will the fate of Tilted Towers finally be revealed beyond being a giant troll job?..
