Post-Apocalyptic RPG 'The Sun' is Coming at the End of the Month

The Sun, a post-apocalyptic role-playing game, examines a future earth under a much hotter, far more radioactive sun. Governments tried and failed at world distribution but got bogged down in the usual issues of action, and started to do too little too late anyway. As food and water became more scarce the old society broke down and chaos and hunger reigned. New societies and new rules took hold and it was into this world the Crow was born. A first-person shooter, The Sun feels a lot like the Fallout franchise, and the graphics look pretty good...

Supercell really hit it big with Clash Royale [Free]. Not only has it gotten huge on mobile, big enough to take on Hearthstone [Free], but they are one of the frontrunners in the charge to bring esports to the mobile world. Clash Royale's spring season pulled in over one-million players, all lined up to prove their skills and take the title as the best player in each of the game's regions. Now the fall season is gearing up starting with the Crown Championship 20 Win Challenge. To get in on the action you have to win 20 games August 16th through August 20th. Winners will earn in-game prizes and will qualify for the next stage, bracket play, and ultimately a chance at a global prize pool of over one-million bucks...

'Legendary DXP,' a Digital Deck-Building Game Based on the Popular Tabletop Version, is Launching Next Week

Last June, Upper Deck — the trading-card and sports memorabilia maker — announced that it was moving into the digital arena with Legendary DXP, a digital trading card game based on its Legendary tabletop games. The best known of these is probably Legendary: A Marvel Deck Building Game, though as any true browncoat can tell you, there's also a version based on Joss Whedon's Firefly. Legendary DXP will use similar deck building gameplay as the tabletop games, though it will be set in a new — and considerably less expensive to license — fantasy world called Alamyth. The names have changed but the theme remains and players will recruit powerful and legendary heroes to improve their deck and use it to battle dastardly evil-doing villains that keep popping up...

Vainglory [Free] is one of the biggest games on either app store and home to the most competitive MOBA scene in mobile gaming. Super Evil Megacorp, the makers of Vainglory, just released a brand-new update to the game yesterday. Version 2.7 is headlined by a new hero: Reza. Reza is an assassin who is quite fond of fire, judging by his powers. He sports Scorcher, a fiery shockwave that'll crispify foes in its path and an ultimate power in the form of Netherform Detonator, a nuke of fiery destruction. Supporting his fire-based arsenal is, appropriately enough, the Firestarter heroic perk which allow Reza's basic attacks to do crystal damage after applying Firestarter with his special attacks. You can unlock Reza with ICE for the first seven days and either ICE or glory thereafter...

Age of Conquest IV [Free], by Noble Master LLC, is one of my very favorite conquer-the-world type games for my iPad. It scratches that Civilization and Rome: Total War itch without requiring hours and hours of play time. The game’s AI is challenging and there’s also a very well done multiplayer mode where you can set all manner of options, including the length of time to complete a turn. Age of Conquest IV also has one of the best freemium models I’ve seen—the game is free-to-play with optional in-app purchases to unlock additional maps and multiplayer cosmetics...

Become a Restaurateur and Master Foodie in 'Chef Wars,' Coming Soon

It will soon be time to do battle…in the kitchen. Chef Wars is an upcoming food-discovery RPG by Mindcake Games where you compete against other players to attract top talent, find the best ingredients, and create hundreds of new and real-life recipes. Games will have a theme and you pick the recipe you feel best fits the theme and are then stacked up against your rivals by a team of 11 judges—each with unique tastes, preferences, criteria and personalities—who render a score. The winner grows their cash and prestige in the foodie world. A big part of the game will happen behind the scenes, before the judged competitions, and hard work there will bring home the bacon…or filet mignon...

Zapdos, the Electric/Flying type Legendary Pokemon, has been released into the wilds of Pokémon GO [Free]. It is the third legendary First Generation bird to take a one-week stint in the real world and replaces the fiery Moltres. Spawn times have been a bit confusing for both Moltres and Articuno, with both prior Pokemon only appearing for week-long stints, which has hit a sour chord with fans facing limited time to catch them. Ninantic doesn't need any more angry-horde action coming off a disastrous showing at Pokémon GO Fest in Chicago, so hopefully Zapdos won't be unnecessarily tough to track...

DC Unchained features three-on-three battles between heroes and villains in real time. The action will occur throughout Metropolis, Gotham City, and other recognizable locales...

'Dereliction,' an Upcoming Squad-Based RTS, Shows Promise and is Looking for Demo Testers in Our Forums

Dereliction is an upcoming real-time strategy game where you take command of a squad of space-based mercenaries. Your job is to find derelict vessels floating in space and clear them of hostiles so salvage operations can commence. The game is about clearing just such a vessel from an infestation of aliens who are none too pleased to get their eviction notice. The Dross are insect-like aliens that spawn like crazy near the power core of the dying spacecraft. When your team arrives, however, they will wake up plenty fast and you'll have a fight on your hands...

Indie developer Simogo Games has been creating fun and engaging mobile games for seven years across a number of genres. SPL-T [$2.99] is an awesome minimalist puzzle game. DEVICE 6 [$3.99] is an interactive fiction thriller. Both are popular games and both have received critical acclaim and the well-deserved attention of an Apple featured game. Both are also, fortunately, updated to 64 bits and good to go for iOS 11. The same can't be said for many other Simogo titles…yet...

Wave Light Games, the indie developer behind fantasy tactical RPGs Demon's Rise [$7.99] and Demon's Rise 2 [$7.99], has a new game available in the App Store. Strike Team Hydra [$5.99] is inspired by XCOM and, as such, brings a similar tactical feel to outer space. You'll build a crew of six space marines, selected from eleven intriguingly varied options, each with their own strengths and special attacks and abilities. Wave Light Games titles are known for their diverse character options and always leave me stuck on the character selection screen agonizing between a bunch of awesome options, and Strike Team Hydra was no different...

Collectible-card game Faeria [Free (HD)] launched earlier this year armed with a new spin on a familiar genre. It introduced the "living board" where players add lands to a hex-based battlefield and use those lands to summon creatures to take the battle to the foe. It's certainly different than Hearthstone [Free] and other CCG contenders and the battlefield sculpting aspect brings a separate layer of strategy and challenge...

Death Road to Canada [$9.99] by Rocketcat LLC is one of the better games of 2017, and certainly one of the more humorous games about the zombie apocalypse. In Death Road you hit the road and hope to make it through the walking dead and other trials to the relative safety of Canada all the way from the decidedly unsafe environs of Florida. It's a really deep game with a lot to do and it just keeps getting better...

Games publisher PikPok just released an intriguing bit of marketing, a teaser for an upcoming game. It's a web page with an long range transceiver. When pressed, the buttons play a short audio clip. Number two, for example, is a woman saying, "I think we'll be ok here, they all seem really nice." Sure lady, then why is the music so freaking creepy? Number 8 is a man advising anyone listening to, "Stay inside, lock all doors and windows, do not be concerned." Look, people, have you never seen a horror flick, get the heck out of there!..

'Rogue Wizards' Review - A Turn-Based RPG with all the Loot

Do you like loot in your games? More specifically, do you like grabbing loot from the corpses of your foes and using said loot to create even more corpses and get even better loot? If you answered yes to this question I’d like to introduce you to Rogue Wizards [Free]. Rogue Wizards is a turn-based tactical role-playing game that made the leap from Steam to iOS earlier this year. It features a primary story line focused on fairness and equality among wielders of magic in a fantasy setting. The plot, though decent, is certainly not the reason to play this game. The reason to play is the fun and challenging combat and, of course, all the loot...

'Nexoman,' Out Next Week, Looks to Become the GoBots to 'Pokémon Go's' Transformers

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, or so they say. Pokémon Go [Free] must feel very flattered these days. We have another contender for the capture and collect a bunch of creatures genre taking the field soon. Nexoman is hitting the App Store on August 10th and will have you exploring a large game world full of over 300 monsters to combat, capture, train, and evolve. Lime Turtle Inc, the makers of the game, have been hard at work on the game for over two years and after a successful beta are ready to launch...

'Hades' Star' Review - Explore, Expand, and Fight Your Way to Galactic Dominance in this Space Based MMO

Take command of an expedition to the distant Hades galaxy in space-based MMO Hades’ Star [Free]. A futuristic gold rush kicked off when scouts returned with word that the newly discovered galaxy was full of profitable planets to colonize, asteroids to mine, and money to be made and you’re right there with the pack...

Guilds are big in games, they build a community and often keep players coming back long after the shine wears off. Angry Birds 2 [Free] turned two last weekend and decided to get in on the guild action with the recently released Clans update. The Clans update lets you team up with friends to attack new challenges and earn some rewards. The first such opportunity is the clan-streak challenge which rewards the whole group for completing win streaks and earning points. The more points earned, the better the reward. Humans being humans, there will undoubtedly be plenty of competition to climb the clan rankings...

Puzzle games have really upped the ante in recent years to add challenge and tension to the gaming experience. Time limits, move limits, stars to earn, and points to accrue all say, "Sure you can win, but can you win the best?" There's nothing inherently wrong with these mechanics. When employed well—and not just to sell packs of hints—they can make puzzle games more fun. Sometimes, however, you don't want to worry about moves and stars and points and how long it takes you. This is where minimalist puzzle games find their niche. They set aside the quest to find the very best solution and challenge you to find any solution. This week's freshly released Neo Angle [$0.99] is a minimalist puzzle game and well worth a look...

'Miracle Merchant' Review - A Masterful Solo Card Game from the Creator of 'Card Crawl'

Do you love solitaire-style mobile games? If the answer is yes you're in luck because Miracle Merchant [$1.99] released today and is one of the best card games in the App Store. Miracle Merchant is the latest title from TinyTouchTales, indie developer and master of modern solitaire variants. 2015's Card Crawl [$2.99] is on my Mount Olympus of mobile games and has been the source of countless hours (seriously, I couldn't begin to count them) of entertainment. Card Thief [$1.99] was released earlier this year and is also eminently replayable...
